Welsh mourning overshadows friendly results

Football was almost a side issue in Cardiff, as Wales remembered former manager Gary Speed, who died in November, with a friendly game against Costa Rica. The visitors were 1-0 winners on the night, but Speed's replacement, Chris Coleman, did not take offence. "It was always going to be difficult under the circumstances," he said. "This was about one guy and it was important we were there to show our support."

Switzerland's friendly game against Argentina also had the look of a one-man show. Lionel Messi has rarely sparkled for his country as brightly as he does so regularly at FC Barcelona, but he made an exception in Berne, scoring his first international hat-trick in a 3-1 victory.
