FC Schalke 04 coach Huub Stevens will have to summon every last ounce of his vast experience on Thursday when his team attempt to overturn a 4-2 quarter-final first-leg home defeat at Athletic Club and reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League.
The 58-year-old Dutchman knows all about the latter stages of European competitions, having orchestrated Schalke's march to UEFA Cup glory in 1997 in his first spell in Gelsenkirchen. Stevens says those memories "don't help right now", but he is keen to lay down solid foundations to allow the likes of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Raúl González to "bring out their individual quality". He tells UEFA.com how.
