Chelsea lift England up European Cup ranking

Chelsea FC's dramatic triumph in Munich is England's fourth in the UEFA Champions League era, taking the country's number of European Cup wins to 12, one behind Spain's record.

Chelsea FC's shoot-out victory against FC Bayern München, their first continental title, is England's fourth win in the UEFA Champions League era and means the country is within one triumph of Spain as the most decorated nation in European Cup history.

The London club have emulated Manchester United FC (1999, 2008) and Liverpool FC (2005) in conquering Europe since the competition was rebranded for 1992/93. The Blues are the 22nd team to have their name engraved on the famous trophy and lift England's number of successes to 12, the same as Italy.

Chelsea, beaten on penalties by United in the 2008 showpiece, are the tenth side to have lifted the silverware once and the first maiden victor since Borussia Dortmund in 1997.
