Leekens leave Belgium post for Club Brugge

"The sky's the limit," said Georges Leekens after announcing that he has resigned his position as Belgium coach to take over Belgian First League runners-up Club Brugge KV.

Georges Leekens has left his post as coach of Belgium's national team to take over the reins of Club Brugge KV.

The 62-year-old has agreed a three-year deal with the Jan Breydelstadion outfit and replaces Christoph Daum, who took over last summer and led the club to second spot in the Belgian championship this term, thus securing a place in the third qualifying round of next season's UEFA Champions League.

Under contract with Belgium until 2014, Leekens leaves his post with the Royal Belgian Football Association (URBSFA-KBVB) after failing to lead Les Diables Rouges to UEFA EURO 2012. A former player with Club Brugge from 1972 to 1981, he also coached the Blauw-Zwart between 1989 and 1991.

"I've found a fantastic project at Club Brugge and an ambitious chairman," said Leekens. "I will do things my own way. The Brugge fans have already waited a long time for trophies and we want to give them some. We will go for it, and the sky's the limit."

Capped three times by Belgium during his playing days, Leekens led Club Brugge to the Belgian title in 1989/90 and the Belgian Cup the following year, having also lifted the cup with Cercle Brugge KSV in 1984/85. He took over the Belgium job from Dick Advocaat in May 2010.
