Ferguson agrees new deal

Sir Alex Ferguson has signed a new three-year contract with English champions Manchester United FC.

Manchester United FC manager Sir Alex Ferguson has agreed a new three-year deal with the English champions.

Until summer 2005
Ferguson, who changed his mind in January about retiring at the end of the season, will remain at Old Trafford until summer 2005. United confirmed the deal in a statement to the Stock Exchange on Wednesday.

'New three-year contract'
"The board of Manchester United plc is delighted to announce that it has reached agreement with Sir Alex Ferguson on a new three-year contract commencing 1 July 2002 until 30 June 2005," the statement read.

Seven Premiership titles
The 60-year-old Scot took the reins at United in 1986 and has since engineered the most successful spell in the club's history. He has won seven FA Premiership titles and four FA Cups and, in 1999, guided United to victory in the UEFA Champions League where they overcame FC Bayern München in a dramatic final.

Top of the table
United's 5-1 defeat of FC Nantes Atlantique on Tuesday night puts them on course for a place in the last eight of this season's Champions League, where Ferguson is hoping to savour a second success at Hampden Park in his home city of Glasgow in May. Another domestic title is also within United's reach; they are top of the Premiership after 12 wins in their last 13 league games.
