Manchester City recruit Rodwell from Everton

Manchester City FC manager Roberto Mancini has made his first signing of the summer, bringing in young England midfielder Jack Rodwell from Everton FC on a five-year deal.

English champions Manchester City FC have signed Jack Rodwell from Everton FC on a five-year contract.

Rodwell, 21, moves for an undisclosed fee – reported to be in the region of €15m. The versatile midfielder is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in English football, and said: "I relish the opportunity of playing with some of the best players in the world and continuing my development." He becomes manager Roberto Mancini's first signing of the summer.

A regular in England's youth teams, Rodwell came through Everton's academy system before making his first team debut in 2007. He went on to play 85 Premier League games for the club, scoring four goals. A first England cap followed in November last year.

Manchester City picked up their first piece of silverware of the new season on Sunday, beating Chelsea FC to win the Community Shield. They start the defence of their English title this weekend against promoted Southampton FC, while their European campaign begins in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
