Paris Saint-Germain FC are returning to the UEFA Champions League after eight seasons and begin their group campaign against FC Dynamo Kyiv, the club that knocked them out in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup quarter-final.

Previous meetings
• The fixture at the Parc des Princes on 9 April 2009 ended 0-0, Dynamo winning 3-0 on home soil two weeks later with Ognjen Vukojević scoring the third.

• The lineups in Paris were:
PSG: Landreau, Ceará, Traoré, Camara, Makonda, Sessegnon (Pancrate 88), Chantôme, Clément, Rothen, Luyindula (Kežman 61), Hoarau (Maurice 75).
Dynamo: Bogush, Betão, Vukojević, Sabljić, Corrêa (Gusev 84), Aliyev (Cernat 73), Eremenko, Milevskiy, El Kaddouri, Ninković, Yussuf.

• The teams' only other competitive fixtures came in the 1994/95 UEFA Champions League group stage, PSG winning 2-1 away and 1-0 at home. Goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy, then just 19, appeared in both games for Dynamo.

• PSG have played two other ties against Ukrainian opposition, defeating SC Tavriya Simferopol 5-0 on aggregate in the 2001 UEFA Intertoto Cup third round with a 4-0 home win. In the 2010/11 UEFA Cup group stage they beat FC Karpaty Lviv 2-0 at home and drew 1-1 away.

• Dynamo's four other away games against French sides produced three defeats in which they failed to score a single goal. The exception came with a 3-1 victory at RC Lens in the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League group stage.

Match background
• PSG, runners-up in Ligue 1 last season and making their fifth tilt at Europe's biggest club prize, were last in the competition in 2004/05. They started with a 3-0 home defeat by Chelsea FC and went on to beat FC Porto 2-0 in Paris but a 3-1 home loss to PFC CSKA Moskva meant they finished fourth in their group.

• Dynamo, who finished second in last season's Ukrainian Premier League, are embarking on their 14th UEFA Champions League campaign. They finished last at this stage in 2009/10 despite three goals in the last 19 minutes helping them record a 3-1 win against FC Rubin Kazan on matchday one.

• Away from home they lost 2-0 at FC Barcelona and drew at FC Internazionale Milano (2-2) and Rubin (0-0) but also finished bottom of their group.

• This time round the Ukrainian side came through two qualifying rounds, winning their first three fixtures. They overcame Feyenoord 2-1 at home and 1-0 away in the third qualifying round, then won 3-1 at VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach in the play-off first leg, going through despite a 2-1 home defeat.

Team ties
• Jérémy Ménez scored in France's 2-0 victory against Ukraine in Donetsk on 15 June at UEFA EURO 2012. Taras Mikhalik, Yehven Khacheridi and Andriy Yarmolenko were in the losing side.

• France's Blaise Matuidi faced Ukraine in a friendly in Donetsk on 6 June 2011. The visitors won 4-1 with Khacheridi and Artem Milevskiy appearing on the losing side.

• Zlatan Ibrahimović scored the opening goal in Sweden's 2-1 defeat by Ukraine in a UEFA EURO 2012 group fixture at Kyiv's Olympic Stadium on 11 June. Khacheridi, Oleh Gusev, Yarmolenko, Mikhalik and Milevskiy were all on the opposite side.

• In September 2011, Diego Lugano scored the second goal in Uruguay's 3-2 victory in a friendly international against Ukraine in Kharkiv. Shovkovskiy and Yarmolenko, who scored and provided an assist, were in the home team.

• Taiwo played alongside Thiago Silva and Ibrahimović at Milan for the first half of last season.

• Ideye Brown played in FC Sochaux-Montbéliard's 2-1 Ligue 1 defeat by PSG at the Parc des Princes on 15 January 2011. Five months earlier he had scored the second goal in Sochaux's 3-1 win in the reverse fixture.
