Paris showdown for PSG and Porto

The Group A finishing positions will be decided in Paris with FC Porto holding the advantage at the top, although Paris Saint-Germain FC will claim first place with a win.

The winning side at the Parc des Princes will finish on top of Group A although a draw will be enough for FC Porto to hold off Paris Saint-Germain FC, who need three points to overtake their opponents.

• PSG won 2-0 at FC Dynamo Kyiv on matchday five to join the Portuguese champions in the knockout rounds. It came courtesy of two goals – his first for the club – in seven minutes either side of half-time from Ezequiel Lavezzi.

• At the same time, Porto finished their home fixtures with a perfect three wins out of three – only the second time they had achieved that and the first since the 1999/2000 first group stage – by beating GNK Dinamo Zagreb 3-0. João Moutinho was the architect of the success, setting up goals for Lucho González and Silvestre Varela either side of scoring himself.

• In these teams' matchday two fixture, the only goal came from Porto's James Rodríguez with seven minutes remaining.

• PSG began the campaign with a 4-1 home win against Dynamo and also beat Dinamo 4-0 there. Porto won 2-0 at Dinamo and dropped their only points of the section so far with a goalless draw in Kyiv.

Previous meetings
• PSG were also in the same group as Porto in their last UEFA Champions League campaign, in 2004/05, and won their home game 2-0 thanks to goals from Charles-Édouard Coridon and Pauleta. The game in Portugal ended goalless.

• The teams in Paris on 21 October 2004 were:
PSG: Letizi, Pichot, Pierre-Fanfan, Yepes, Reinaldo (Cissé 73) Armand, Cana, Coridon, Rothen (Bošković 49), M'Bami, Pauleta (Ljuboja 82).
Porto: Vítor Baía, Jorge Costa (Bosingwa 76), Ricardo Costa, Costinha (Quaresma 52), Pepe, Seitaridis, Maniche, Diego, Carlos Alberto, Derlei (Postiga 69), McCarthy.

• PSG are unbeaten at home in all five games against Portuguese opponents. Apart from 2004, those matches all came in the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League, PSG winning two and drawing two. The most recent meeting, against SL Benfica, ended in a 1-1 draw and their departure from the 2010/11 round of 16. Their record against Portuguese teams home and away is W4 D3 L4.

• In 2003/04, Porto got the better of three French teams en route to lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy. They beat Olympique de Marseille 3-2 away and 1-0 at home in the group stage and ousted Olympique Lyonnais in the quarter-finals, drawing 2-2 in France after winning 2-0 at the Estádio do Dragão. They then overcame AS Monaco FC 3-0 in the Gelsenkirchen final.

• The previous year Porto had lifted the UEFA Cup, a run that included a third round success against RC Lens. They lost 1-0 away after a 3-0 win in Portugal.

• That loss at Lens is one of only three defeats Porto have suffered in nine visits to Ligue 1 clubs, and the most recent. Porto have two wins to their name with the other four contests drawn. Porto's record against French sides home and away is W10 D6 L4.

Team ties
• Thiago Silva joined Porto in 2004 but only played in the reserve team before leaving for FC Dinamo Moskva the following year.

• Alex Sandro and Danilo play for Brazil alongside Thiago Silva, the trio helping their country to the men's Olympic silver medal in London in August. They lost the final 2-1 against Mexico.

• Lucho scored Marseille's goal in a 2-1 Ligue 1 defeat at PSG on 7 November 2010. The midfielder also found the net in OM's 3-0 win in Paris the previous season and finished on the victorious side in four of his six meetings with PSG while at Marseille, losing only that 2010 fixture.

• Helton was part of the UD Leiria team that lost 2-0 to Mathieu Bodmer's LOSC Lille in the 2004 UEFA Intertoto Cup finals.
