Bordeaux bid to end drought at Marítimo

FC Girondins de Bordeaux are yet to score on their travels in Europe this season, and it will be far from easy for the French club to snap that barren streak at CS Marítimo.

CS Marítimo will hope the form book comes good in UEFA Europa League Group D as they look to keep a fourth successive clean sheet in Funchal. Their opponents are FC Girondins de Bordeaux, who have yet to score away in Europe this season.

Previous meetings
• This is the teams' first European meeting and Marítimo's first game against a French club.

• Bordeaux's only previous experience of Portuguese opposition stems back to the 1986/87 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, where they overcame SL Benfica 2-1 on aggregate, drawing 1-1 in Portugal and winning 1-0 back in France.

Match background
• Marítimo's five-game unbeaten run in Europe this season (W2 D3) ended with a 2-0 loss at Club Brugge KV on matchday two. However, they have yet to concede a European goal in Funchal this term, recording two 0-0 draws and a 1-0 win.

• Following matchday two's 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United FC, Bordeaux are without a win in three European away games and have not scored on the road in UEFA competition this season.

Team facts
• Bordeaux forward Henri Saivet turns 22 the morning after the game.

• Marítimo boast French talent in the form of midfielder Valentin Roberge, who featured for the reserve teams of EA Guingamp and Paris Saint-Germain FC, and goalkeeper Romain Salin, who played for FC Lorient, FC Libourne-Saint-Seurin and Tours FC before coming to Portugal.

• A defensive midfielder, Marítimo coach Pedro Martins reached a career peak with a three-year spell at Sporting Clube de Portugal (1995-98), later representing Boavista FC and CD Santa Clara.  He moved into coaching in the lower leagues, replacing Mitchell van der Gaag at Marítimo in 2010 following a spell as the club's youth team boss.

• Bordeaux coach Francis Gillot was a defender who spent the bulk of his playing career at RC Lens. He coached at the FC Sochaux-Montbéliard academy before returning to Lens to take joint-charge and then sole command of the first team in January 2005. Subsequent spells with Sochaux and, since 2011, Bordeaux have cemented his reputation as a straight-talking coach with a penchant for attacking football.

• Gillot has been on the losing side only once in 18 home games in European club competition – 15 as a coach (W13 D1 L1) and three as a player (W1 D2 L0). His sole defeat came when his Lens side went down 2-1 to Parma FC in the 2006/07 group stage.

• This is FARE Action Week, with UEFA giving its support to Europe's biggest anti-discrimination campaign. There are activities before each UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League game which will be witnessed by thousands of fans in the stadiums and millions on television. A 30-second RESPECT TV spot and announcements over stadium loudspeakers will encourage fans to join the UEFA family in its call to unite against racism in football. Every team will be accompanied on to the pitch by children wearing Unite Against Racism T-shirts and captains will be asked to wear a Unite Against Racism armband.
