Videoton obstacle to Basel's winning ambition

Without a win in five European matches, FC Basel 1893 could have wished for an easier trip than their one to Hungary to face Group G rivals Videoton FC, who boast a formidable home record.

Videoton FC will look to extend their 23-year unbeaten home run in continental competition in UEFA Europa League Group G, as FC Basel 1893 seek to end a five-match wait for a European win.

Previous meetings
• The sides are meeting for the first time in UEFA competition.

• In their only experience of Swiss opposition, Videoton drew 1-1 at home and lost 2-0 away against Grasshopper-Club in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup second qualifying round.

• Basel's five games against Hungarian sides have ended W4 D0 L1 (W2 D0 L0 at home – W2 D0 L1 in Budapest). That sole defeat was over 40 years ago in their first encounter – a 2-0 loss at Újpest FC in the European Champion Clubs' Cup in September 1972.

Match background
• Videoton's 3-0 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday two prompted coach Ricardo Sá Pinto's dismissal and extended their unbeaten home run in Europe to nine games (W4 D5), a sequence stretching back over 23 years to a 3-0 loss to Hibernian FC on 26 September 1989.

• Having started their European season with three straight wins, Basel are now without a victory in five continental fixtures (D3 L2), having drawn both of their opening Group G encounters. They have also failed to score in their last two away outings in Europe.

Team facts
• Videoton are within three goals of conceding their 50th UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League goal – this is their 43rd game in the competitions.

• Basel are within two goals of conceding their 100th UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League goal – this is their 75th outing in the competitions.

• Videoton are coached by 51-times capped former Portugal midfielder Paulo Sousa, who won back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles as a player with Juventus (1995/96) and Borussia Dortmund (1996/97), as well as domestic titles in Portugal, Italy and Germany. He coached in England with Queens Park Rangers FC, Swansea City AFC and Leicester City FC before joining Videoton in May 2011.

• Basel dismissed German coach Heiko Vogel on 15 October, with the club lying fourth in the ten-team Swiss table, immediately installing Murat Yakin as his replacement.

• Murat Yakin, the older brother of fellow former Swiss international Hakan Yakin, represented Grasshopper-Club, VfB Stuttgart, Fenerbahçe SK and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, but the 49-times capped defender enjoyed his best seasons as captain of Basel, leading them to three league titles and three Swiss Cups. He coached FC Thun and FC Luzern before returning to take charge of Basel.

• This is FARE Action Week, with UEFA giving its support to Europe's biggest anti-discrimination campaign. There are activities before each UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League game which will be witnessed by thousands of fans in the stadiums and millions on television. A 30-second RESPECT TV spot and announcements over stadium loudspeakers will encourage fans to join the UEFA family in its call to unite against racism in football. Every team will be accompanied on to the pitch by children wearing Unite Against Racism T-shirts and captains will be asked to wear a Unite Against Racism armband.
