Second-half goals by Sotiris Ninis and Kostas Mitroglou earned Greece a comfortable 2-0 home victory against Lithuania and maintained their 100% record in FIFA World Cup qualifying Group G.
In a game they dominated throughout, the only surprise was that it took Greece until ten minutes after the interval to break the deadlock through Ninis. The result was put beyond doubt when Mitroglou emerged from the bench to crown a commanding performance with 18 minutes remaining.
The visitors combined defensive toil with a little luck as they kept their opponents at bay for much of the opening period. Fanis Gekas planted a header wide from Vassilis Torossidis's delivery and did the same again a quarter of an hour in following good work from Nikos Spyropoulos. Lithuania goalkeeper Žydrūnas Karčemarskas was doing his bit to ensure his side were not blown away, meanwhile, making superb reflex saves from Ninis and Kostas Fortounis.
The introduction of Mitroglou breathed new life into Greece's attack after the break. The Olympiacos FC forward came to the fore when his firm header struck a post and rebounded into the path of Ninis, who made no mistake from close range. Ninis then turned provider by teeing up Mitroglou, who found the net with a sizzling finish from an angle.
