Albelda out for a month to add to Valencia woes

David Albelda's hamstring tear could not have come at a worse time for Valencia CF boss Mauricio Pellegrino who must hope Fernando Gago recovers fast from a blow to the head.

Valencia CF coach Mauricio Pellegrino's injury problems continue to mount ahead of Wednesday's UEFA Champions League trip to FC Bayern München with midfielder David Albelda sidelined by a right hamstring tear.

The 35-year-old former Spanish international pulled up injured in training on Tuesday and, after undergoing tests, was informed he would be out of action for up to four weeks. As well as missing Valencia's Group F assignment at Bayern on matchday one, Albelda will also sit out the home game with LOSC Lille on 2 October.

The news is a further blow to Pellegrino who recently lost attacker Pablo Piatti to a broken arm while midfielder Fernando Gago – a summer arrival from Real Madrid CF – is under observation in Peru after suffering a blow to the head during Argentina's 1-1 FIFA World Cup qualifying draw on Tuesday. Éver Banega (broken leg) and Sergio Canales (right knee) remain long-term absentees, with both eyeing autumn returns.
