Match winner Shelvey lauds Liverpool's fire power

Liverpool FC's Jonjo Shelvey understated the obvious when he said the Reds had "made a statement we can score goals" after his double helped earn a 5-3 win at BSC Young Boys.

Jonjo Shelvey said he hoped his two late goals as a substitute against BSC Young Boys had repaid the faith shown in him by Liverpool FC manager Brendan Rodgers this season after helping inspire a 5-3 win in Berne. The result left the home side, who led 3-2 with 23 minutes remaining, feeling a mixture of pride and frustration, but also the sense they can make an impression in UEFA Europa League Group A.

Jonjo Shelvey, Liverpool midfielder
It was really pleasing to get the two goals and the win. It was a great game for the neutral, though obviously the boss isn't happy that we've conceded three away from home. But we've made a statement that we can score goals.

Ever since he's come here, the manager has been first class with me and he's given me an opportunity. Hopefully with these two goals I've repaid him for that. The team are going to give 100% whoever he puts out and it was a great performance from the younger ones. It's good to come away from a place like this with all three points.

Scott Sutter, Young Boys defender
It was special for me to play against an English team again [Sutter was born and raised near London]. We played really well in attack, but defensively we made too many mistakes. That is the nature of football – if you make too many mistakes at a high level, you lose. But I'm sure we will have chances to win some points in this group.

Elsad Zverotić, Young Boys midfielder
I think we played quite well, but in the end we made too many mistakes and at this level you can't afford such errors. We saw here that a Swiss team are able to compete with an English team and that makes me proud because, particularly at the beginning of the second half, we did very well. But of course we are disappointed because we lost the match and conceded five goals.
