Talking point: Coaches of tomorrow

The players who go on to become great coaches are not necessarily the ones who stand out on the pitch: who among today's crop has what it takes to thrive in the dugout?

The current crop of UEFA Champions League coaches features plenty of men with fine playing careers behind them – Paris Saint Germain FC's Carlo Ancelotti, FC Bayern München's Jupp Heynckes, Manchester City FC's Roberto Mancini and Chelsea FC's Roberto Di Matteo included – yet also a good number who never caught the eye on the pitch.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær is making his name at Molde

Arsenal FC manager Arsène Wenger peaked with a brief spell at RC Strasbourg; Viktor Goncharenko's playing career at FC BATE Borisov – he club he now coaches – was over by the age of 25; FC Barcelona's Tito Vilanova spent most of his playing days in the Spanish second tier; Sir Alex Ferguson never played a European game; and Real Madrid CF boss José Mourinho came into football as a translator.

While former Manchester United FC forward Ole Gunnar Solskjær is now one of Europe's hottest managerial properties after winning a Norwegian title in his first season at Molde FK, it is not usually marquee players that go on to become great coaches. Who among the talents in action in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League group stage can you see making an impact on the bench once they hang up their boots?
