Owen blow for Liverpool

Liverpool FC are set to be missing Michael Owen for their crucial visit to FC Barcelona.

Liverpool FC are set to be without Michael Owen for next week's UEFA Champions League match at FC Barcelona.

'Tight hamstring'
The England striker was substituted during Wednesday night's FA Premiership 3-0 victory over Newcastle United FC after pulling up during the match. "He's got a tight hamstring," Liverpool assistant manager Phil Thompson told the club's official website. "When he went down he felt it straight away and he signalled to me on the bench."

Fingers crossed
"We will be keeping our fingers crossed for Barcelona next week, but it will probably be a week to ten days," Thompson added. Owen has scored 14 league goals for Liverpool this season and two in the Champions League.

Result needed
The 22-year-old's absence next Wednesday would be a major blow for the team, particularly with strike partner Nicolas Anelka not eligible for the Champions League. Liverpool are bottom of Group D with three points after four games of the second group stage and need a result at Camp Nou. Barcelona have five points and are in second place.

Murphy magic
England coach Sven-Göran Eriksson was at Anfield for the match and will be anxious about his star striker's condition ahead of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. One bright spot for the Swede was the form of midfield player Danny Murphy, who scored two goals in last night's triumph.
