• Followed up his 2010 FIFA World Cup triumph by helping Spain retain the UEFA European Championship; played all 570 minutes of La Roja's victorious campaign in Poland and Ukraine, contributing greatly to the team's feat of conceding just one goal in six games, and also scored his penalty in the semi-final shoot-out win against Portugal.

• Missed the first leg of FC Barcelona's UEFA Champions League semi-final away to Chelsea FC (0-1) and was injured in the second leg and taken off after 26 minutes as Barça drew 2-2 and relinquished their hold on the trophy.

• Returned to action at the end of the season as the Blaugrana compensated for losing the Liga title to Real Madrid CF by winning the Copa del Rey with a 3-0 final defeat of Athletic Club.
