• Scored consistently at a rate of over a goal per game throughout 2012 – for both FC Barcelona and Argentina – and surpassed Gerd Müller's record of 85 goals in a calendar year.

• Registered 73 times in 60 appearances for Barça in 2011/12, the last of them in the final of the Copa del Rey, won 3-0 against Athletic Club, and captured the ESM Golden Shoe with a record-breaking tally of 50 Liga goals. In March he became the Catalan club's all-time leading scorer, and by October, aged 25, he had amassed a grand total of 300 senior career goals for club and country.

• Finished as the top scorer in the UEFA Champions League for the fourth successive season, with a record-equalling haul of 14 goals, including five in one game – an unprecedented feat – against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Came joint second in the voting for the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award.
