• The driving force behind Real Madrid CF's 2011/12 Liga title triumph, scoring 46 goals – incorporating seven hat-tricks and the winner away to FC Barcelona – to trump his record-breaking tally of 40 set the previous season.

• Struck ten goals in as many games in the UEFA Champions League, including seven in the three knockout rounds, as Real Madrid CF were denied a place in the final only by a penalty shoot-out defeat.

• Also lost the semi-final of UEFA EURO 2012 on penalties as Portugal went down to Spain, but enjoyed a fabulous tournament, leading his country by example with three goals – the joint-highest tally in the tournament – and two man-of-the-match performances (against the Netherlands and Czech Republic); in October he became only the third Portugal player to reach 100 caps.
