• Ended his eight-year association with Chelsea FC by scoring the decisive penalty that brought the club victory against FC Bayern München in the UEFA Champions League final, following a 1-1 draw in which he headed an 88th-minute equaliser.

• Scored six goals in the Blues' triumphant European campaign, including vital efforts at Stamford Bridge against SSC Napoli and FC Barcelona, and became the first player to score in four FA Cup finals when he struck the winner versus Liverpool FC.

• Left Chelsea in the summer, aged 34, to start a fresh challenge in the Chinese Super League with Shanghai Shenhua FC.
