Chelsea FC captain John Terry could sit out the rest of the UEFA Champions League group stage after being laid off for three weeks with a knee injury.

Manager Roberto Di Matteo confirmed on Friday that the centre-back had strained ligaments in his right knee. Terry sustained the injury when Liverpool FC striker Luis Suárez fell on his leg during the 1-1 Premier League draw last Sunday. It was initially feared the 31-year-old would be sidelined for months, but Chelsea announced earlier this week that he would be missing only a matter of weeks.

Nonetheless Terry – who was just returning from a four-game domestic ban against Liverpool – is likely to be absent for Chelsea's two remaining matches in Group E. Following last week's late home win against FC Shakhtar Donetsk, the European champions are on seven points, the same number as their Ukrainian rivals at the top of the section. They travel to third-placed Juventus on matchday five.
