• Hansen grew up in Trofors in the county of Nordland in northern Norway. A talented midfielder, he won the Norwegian double with Rosenborg BK in 1988.
• He left Rosenborg after the 1989 season, and went on to play for smaller sides, before returning as youth coach. Then Sundsvall in Sweden offered him his first head coaching role in 2001. He once again found himself at Rosenborg in 2004 as assistant coach, and was promoted to head coach a year later.
• Hansen's tenure at Rosenborg only lasted seven months, however, and he moved on to Aalesunds for the 2006 season, before heading back to Sundsvall the following year. A stint at Rosenborg's feeder club Ranheim followed before he got the call to coach Norway's U21 side in January 2011.
