Málaga CF will look to extend a memorable debut UEFA Champions League campaign as they prepare for the return leg of their last-16 encounter with FC Porto. João Moutinho scored the only goal of the first leg, inflicting a first UEFA Champions League defeat on Málaga, who will be relying on their strong home record to turn the tie around.

Match background
• The game on 19 February was the first meeting between the teams.

• Málaga finished first in Group C, four points clear of seven-time champions AC Milan. Starting with Panathinaikos FC in the play-offs, they had won four games and drawn four in the competition prior to losing in Portugal.

• At home in the group stage, Manuel Pellegrini's team defeated FC Zenit St Petersburg (3-0) and Milan (1-0) before a 2-2 matchday six draw with RSC Anderlecht.

• Málaga have hosted Portuguese visitors once, beating Boavista FC 1-0 in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup quarter-finals only to lose away by the same scoreline and bow out on penalties in their only previous European campaign.

• Porto's 38 games against Spanish sides have given them the record W13 D5 L20. In Spain it is W5 D2 L11, although they have won on three of their last six visits, losing only once. That came in their last visit, 3-2 against Villarreal CF in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League semi-finals, but a 5-1 first-leg victory was enough to take them into the final.

• The Dragons' third piece of continental silverware came on Spanish soil, when they defeated Celtic FC 3-2 after extra time in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup final in Seville.

• Porto have twice lost to Spanish opponents in the UEFA Super Cup in Monaco, going down 2-0 to FC Barcelona in 2011 and 2-1 against Valencia CF in 2004.

• Porto have met Spanish sides in two UEFA Champions League semi-finals. They lost 3-0 to Barcelona in a one-off tie at the Camp Nou in 1993/94, but beat RC Deportivo La Coruña 1-0 on aggregate en route to 2003/04 glory.

• The Portuguese champions, in the knockout rounds for the tenth time, were last at this stage in 2009/10, losing 5-0 at Arsenal FC having won 2-1 at home.

• In finishing runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain FC in Group A this season, Porto won 2-0 at GNK Dinamo Zagreb, drew 0-0 at FC Dynamo Kyiv and lost 2-1 against the group winners.

• Málaga have never before had to overturn a first-leg away defeat in European competition. The Spanish side have kept eight clean sheets in their 11 home games in Europe, including six in succession (a run of 688 minutes) before the matchday six draw against Anderlecht.

• Porto have a strong record when winning the first leg at home, going through 33 times. The most recent of their five aggregate defeats came in the aforementioned tie against Arsenal.

• Porto's shoot-out record in UEFA club competition is:
1-4 v FC Schalke 04, 2007/08 UEFA Champions League round of 16
8-7 v CD Once Caldas, 2004 European/South American Cup final
3-5 v UC Sampdoria, 1994/95 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final

• Málaga's shoot-out record is:
1-4 v Boavista FC, 2002/03 UEFA Cup quarter-final

Team ties

• Lucho González and Martín Demichelis were team-mates at CA River Plate in 2002/03.

• Oguchi Onyewu was sent off against Porto last season in Sporting Clube de Portugal's 2-0 Liga away defeat; Fernando was also dismissed. Manuel Iturra played in UD Leiria's 2-0 home Liga loss to Porto on 14 March 2011.
