Despite playing the majority of his career outside his native Germany, Oliver Bierhoff is backing a Bundesliga side to go all the way in this season's UEFA Champions League. With FC Bayern München, Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 all topping their groups in reaching the last 16, the former Germany striker is confident that at least one of that trio will make it to the Wembley showpiece.

"I am sure that one German team will be in the final," said Bierhoff, 44 and now team manager of the national side. "I think German football is doing better and better, and the clubs have good chances to go forward. [Dortmund] did surprise a little bit because they are a very young team, but winning against Real Madrid and also against Manchester City – teams who have spent double on players – is a great success."

A final appearance in May would also bring the privilege of playing at Wembley, always a special occasion as Bierhoff knows well after scoring the golden goal to win EURO '96 for Germany on the hallowed turf. "The history, the tradition, all the big games that were played there, and also the atmosphere and the feeling of the people here in England – I think it is a very smart decision from UEFA to bring the final this year to Wembley."
