Mallorca and Caparrós call it a day

After RCD Mallorca announced their decision to part ways with coach Joaquín Caparrós, the 57-year-old said he was leaving the club with a "heavy heart" after 16 months in charge.

RCD Mallorca and coach Joaquín Caparrós have agreed to part company after the island side fell to their fourth successive Liga loss, a 3-0 reverse away to Real Sociedad de Fútbol on Sunday.

Brought in to replace the departing Michael Laudrup in October 2011, the 57-year-old Caparrós led Mallorca to an eighth-placed Liga finish last season. Just one victory in their last 17 top-flight appearances this term, however, has left the side second from bottom in the standings.

"It's difficult to have to give this news," said club president Llorenç Serra Ferrer after announcing Monday's decision. "We hired a great coach and today we are saying goodbye to an even better person. We came to the conclusion that we needed to look for a catalyst that would give the team a push towards the goal of remaining in the Liga."

Former Athletic Club, RC Deportivo La Coruña, Sevilla FC and Villarreal CF coach Caparrós added: "Myself [and the club management] spoke with all of our cards face up on the table in an attempt to look for the best solution for Mallorca. I am leaving with a heavy heart as I felt the support of our fans up until the last moment and of a group of players who I am sure can get the team out of the current situation."
