Porto's Martínez shrugs off Falcao comparisons

"Falcao wrote his history here at this club and I'm just starting mine," said prolific FC Porto forward Jackson Martínez ahead of his team's round of 16 tie against Málaga CF.

Striker Jackson Martínez may have been quick to make an impact since arriving at FC Porto last summer, but the Colombian international is keen to play down comparisons with countryman Falcao.

Martínez came to Portugal from CF Jaguares de Chiapas in Mexico and has already scored 20 Portuguese Liga goals in just 19 games. He also found the net three times in UEFA Champions League Group A to help his new employers finish second and book a round of 16 tie against Málaga CF. Such exploits inevitably conjure memories of Falcao, formerly a similarly prolific No9 for the Dragons.

"First of all, I don't like comparisons because I think that everybody has their own style of play," said Martínez, 26. "Falcao wrote his history here at this club and I'm just starting mine.  In terms of looking at Falcao as a rival, people might think that but it isn't true. I'm good friends with Falcao, and I see him as a good person and that he is doing his best, just like I do."

Though Porto have not reached the last eight of Europe's premier club competition for four years, their new marksman is setting his sights high. "I think that nothing is impossible," said Martínez, once of Independiente Medellín. "We will try and I think we have a team that could succeed. But for now, before thinking about winning it, we have to think about the next stage and that is the tie against Málaga."
