England's problems mount

Midfield players Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt are doubtful for England's second Group B game with Switzerland on Thursday.

Twisted ankle
Scholes twisted an ankle in last night's dramatic 2-1 defeat at the Estádio da Luz and is "doubtful", according to coach Eriksson. "He will not train today or tomorrow and is in doubt for Thursday," Eriksson said. "We'll see how he is for Thursday."

Heavy blow
The loss of the midfield player for the Group B fixture would be a heavy blow for England. Many critics judged him England's best performer on Sunday when two added-time goals from Zinedine Zidane gave the reigning European champions a winning start.

Butt doubt
Scholes's Manchester United FC team-mate Butt could also miss out in Coimbra, although he did not feature against France. The 29-year-old was taken to hospital today after damaging his knee in training. A spokesperson said England expected to receive the results on Tuesday.
