Butt out for England

England have confirmed that Nicky Butt is unlikely to feature at UEFA EURO 2004™ after he damaged medial ligaments in his right knee.

Month out?
The Manchester United FC enforcer was taken to hospital in Lisbon for scans on Monday after limping out of a light session in the wake of Sunday night's 2-1 defeat by France. Butt did not play at the Estádio da Luz and will not get an opportunity to add to his 35 caps in Portugal. "This sort of injury normally sidelines you for three or four weeks so it's unlikely he will play again in the tournament," said a Football Association spokesman.

Scholes misses training
England will not be able to call on a replacement for Butt, as tournament rules stipulate that a new player can only be drafted in to replace an injured one prior to a country's opening match. Butt's club-mate Paul Scholes did not take part in training this morning either, increasing speculation that he will be unavailable for England's next Group B outing against Switzerland in Coimbra on Thursday afternoon. The 29-year-old twisted an ankle against the French.

Terry fit
There has been some recent cheer for England, however, as John Terry has returned to full fitness. The central defender is likely to be recalled for Thursday's game despite Ledley King's superb competitive debut alongside Sol Campbell. "There is absolutely no reason to keep Terry out if he is fit," said coach Sven-Göran Eriksson.
