FC Schalke 04 have signed Germany Under-21 forward Christian Clemens from second-tier 1. FC Köln on a four-year deal.

Clemens, 21, moves north in a deal worth €2.8m to become the Gelsenkirchen side's second signing of the summer following the arrival of Borussia Dortmund centre-back Felipe Santana. "He is fast, versatile, has a powerful shot and is as good from the wing as he is in the middle," Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt said of the youngster.

Cologne-born Clemens made 31 league appearances for his home-town club last season, scoring six goals and claiming five assists. He was named in Germany's UEFA European Under-21 Championship squad in Israel this month and featured in all three of their games as they were eliminated after the group stage.
