Austria Wien show grit to frustrate FH

FH Hafnarfjördur 0-0 FK Austria Wien (agg: 0-1)
The Austrian champions shrugged off a red card for Markus Suttner as they shut out FH to book their UEFA Champions League play-off place.

FK Austria Wien held on with ten men to earn the goalless draw against FH Hafnarfjördur that put them into the play-off stage of the UEFA Champions League as 1-0 aggregate winners.

Heimir Gudjónsson's FH were appearing in the third qualifying round for the first time in their history but despite enjoying marginally the better of a nervy match at Kaplakrikavöllur, their run came to an end as even after the second-half dismissal of Markus Suttner, they were unable to find the goal that would have forced extra time.

Home captain Ólafur Snorrason looked the most likely to break the deadlock in a niggly first half, drawing a save from Heinz Lindner before missing the target with a free-kick. Nenad Bjelica's side, guarding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, made it to the interval with their goal intact, however.

The Icelandic title holders' hopes were boosted when Suttner was sent off for a second bookable offence just after the hour but, despite piling on the pressure in the closing stages, FH could not find a way past Lindner. In the end, Daniel Royer's first-leg strike in Vienna proved to be the difference.
