Dick Advocaat has agreed to coach UEFA Europa League contenders AZ Alkmaar for a second time, succeeding Gertjan Verbeek who left the club in late September.
The much-travelled Advocaat guided AZ to a fifth-place finish during a five-month stint at the helm in 2009/10 before being replaced by Verbeek. Advocaat, who won the 2007/08 UEFA Cup and 2008 UEFA Super Cup with FC Zenit, had been out of work since parting company with PSV Eindhoven in May.
A midfielder at ADO Den Haag, Roda JC and FC Utrecht among others, the 66-year-old was twice assistant coach of the Netherlands before leading the Oranje to the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He subsequently landed the Eredivisie title and Dutch Cup as PSV boss, before steering Rangers FC to two league crowns and as many Scottish Cups.
Advocaat also negotiated the Netherlands' run to the UEFA EURO 2004 semi-finals, and oversaw South Korea's 2006 World Cup campaign, before returning to club football with Zenit. More recently he has held the reins of the Belgium national team, AZ and Russia, reprising his PSV coaching role for the 2012/13 campaign.
Advocaat will oversee his first AZ training session on Friday before his side visit Kazakh club FC Shakhter Karagandy in UEFA Europa League Group L next Thursday.
