Europa League: round of 32 second-leg stats

• For the second successive season the UEFA Europa League round of 16 will feature clubs from 11 member associations. Spain and Italy are the best represented with three teams apiece. The only other nation boasting multiple representation is Portugal, with two. Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, England, France, Netherlands, Russia and Switzerland take forward one side each.

• Ukraine went into the round of 32 with four representatives yet took no teams through to the last 16, FC Dynamo Kyiv, FC Shakhtar Donetsk, FC Chornomorets Odesa and FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk all falling by the wayside. Never before in UEFA Europa League history have so many clubs from one country been eliminated in the same round.

• After a modest tally of 27 goals in the round of 32 first legs, 47 were scored in the deciders. The total of 74 reverses a downward trend that had brought 92 goals at this stage of the competition in 2009/10, 80 in 2010/11, 69 in 2011/12 and 66 in 2012/13.

• AFC Ajax were one of just two sides who joined the competition mid-term from the UEFA Champions League to fall in the round of 32. The other was Shakhtar Donetsk, beaten by another of that group, FC Viktoria Plzeň.

• For the first time in the UEFA Europa League, the round of 16 will witness a tie between two clubs from the same country. Indeed there will be two of them, with Juventus taking on ACF Fiorentina and Sevilla FC facing Andalusian rivals Real Betis Balompié. The latter will be the first UEFA Europa League contest between teams from the same city. It will also be the fourth between two Spanish squads, all of the previous three having involved two-time winners Club Atlético de Madrid.

• FC Salzburg set a competition record with their home win against Ajax as they became the only side to win their first eight matches – all six in the group stage plus both legs in the round of 32. They are one of six qualifiers from the group stage who remain unbeaten after eight games, the others being PFC Ludogorets Razgrad, Fiorentina, Sevilla, Olympique Lyonnais and AZ Alkmaar.

• SS Lazio posted a competition record with their 12th draw, and although the 3-3 final scoreline at Ludogorets brought elimination, the goal they registered to open the scoring, from Keita Baldé after 16.88 seconds, was the second fastest in the tournament's history. The quickest remains the one netted by AEK Athens FC striker Ismael Blanco against FC BATE Borisov in a group fixture in November 2009.

• SL Benfica matched a competition landmark when they claimed their tenth successive home victory, the 3-0 triumph over PAOK FC enabling them to equal Atlético's record and prolong a sequence that began on 1 April 2010. The result also brought an end to PAOK's record run of nine away games without defeat.

• Benfica's Eduardo Salvio rejoined Ola Toivonen on top of the UEFA Europa League's all-time appearance list, making his 36th outing against PAOK.

• Only one side who lost the first leg came back to qualify in the second – Tottenham Hotspur FC, who recovered from a 1-0 reverse at Dnipro to win 3-1 at White Hart Lane (after conceding first to go 2-0 down on aggregate).

• None of the round of 32 ties went to extra time or penalties but, as in 2012/13, one tie was settled by the away goals rule, with FC Porto overcoming Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to a 3-3 draw in Germany that followed a 2-2 in Portugal. It was the second time Porto had prevailed on away goals in the UEFA Europa League, the first coming against Sevilla in the round of 32 en route to their trophy success in 2010/11.

• The 2,600th goal of the UEFA Europa League was notched by Juventus forward Pablo Osvaldo in the Italian champions' 2-0 victory at Trabzonspor AŞ. In all, 2,613 goals have been scored in 996 matches, giving an average of 2.62 a game.
