Real Betis Balompié have suffered a double blow ahead of their UEFA Europa League round of 16 second leg meeting with Sevilla FC, with defenders Dídac Vilà and Caro ruled out of the encounter with serious injuries.

Full-back Vilà – on loan from AC Milan – was forced out of the scoreless weekend draw at Elche CF with a fracture at the base of his left tibia. The 24-year-old, who has scored one goal in six UEFA Europa League appearances for Los Verdiblancos this term, was replaced by Caro, who then suffered a left knee ligament strain before the break. The injuries leave Betis coach Gabriel Calderón seeking defensive alternatives ahead of Thursday's visit of Sevilla, who trail 2-0 in the tie following defeat to their city rivals at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán last Thursday.
