Chivu sidelined by foot fracture

AS Roma and Romania defender Cristian Chivu has undergone foot surgery and is out for several weeks.

Foot fracture
The 23-year-old Romanian international broke the fifth metatarsal bone of his left foot just before joining Roma's pre-season training camp. Roma said on their website that he would need to rest for two weeks and then train apart from the first-team squad for another fortnight.

Romanian reports
This means he will miss Romania's opening 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Finland on 18 August. However, reports in Romania suggest he could be sidelined for up to three months, which would rule him out of the following three qualifiers and also the start of Roma's UEFA Champions League campaign.

Debut season
Roma signed Chivu from AFC Ajax for €18m last summer. The centre-back subsequently played 22 Serie A games as the Giallorossi finished runners-up to AC Milan, thus gaining a place in the Champions League group stage.
