Aleksandr Martynovich scored an own goal eight minutes from time and Serhiy Sydorchuk grabbed another in stoppage time as Ukraine bounced back from defeat in their UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group C opener to claim victory against Belarus in Borisov.

The visitors, who began their qualifying campaign with a 1-0 home loss to Slovakia, dominated the first half yet could only muster a single attempt off target as Mykhailo Fomenko's side struggled to find a way through Belarus's compact defensive line.

Ukraine came close to taking the lead in the 36th minute but Roman Zozulya's close-range left-foot volley failed to trouble Belarus goalkeeper Yuri Zhevnov. The hosts – who were unbeaten in four outings prior to kick-off – finally tested Zhevnov's opposite number Andriy Pyatov in added time, Egor Filipenko's header from the centre of the box being tipped over by the Ukraine keeper.

Georgi Kondratiev's men started the second half brightly. Martynovich missed the target with a header in the 51st minute as Ukraine failed to clear Sergei Krivets's free-kick. Stanislav Dragun was also denied by a sharp stop from Pyatov before Martynovich diverted Yevhen Konoplyanka's cross into his own net, off his knee, to give the away team the advantage.

Filipenko blasted over after Sergei Kornilenko's effort had been blocked as the Belarusians chased an equaliser. However, Ukraine found a second on the break through Sydorchuk to seal victory in added time. Andriy Yarmolenko, clean through on the counterattack, squared for the substitute to secure the win from close range.
