Denmark remained in contention for a place at UEFA EURO 2016 by seeing off the challenge of Group I rivals Serbia in Copenhagen.

Yussuf Poulsen fired the hosts into an early lead with his first international goal and the hosts could have doubled their advantage before the break when they were awarded a penalty, but Vladimir Stojković blocked Daniel Agger's kick. Instead the Danes had to wait until the 87th minute to seal the win, substitute Jakob Poulsen cementing his team's second spot in the section.

Denmark had come from behind to prevail 3-1 in Belgrade in November, but this time it was Morten Olsen's side who struck first. Nicklas Bendtner's first-time lay-off set up the opening, and 20-year-old Yussuf Poulsen drilled his breakthrough goal beyond Stojković.

Kasper Schmeichel was then called into action, beating out Zoran Tošić's fierce drive, before Denmark twice came close to extending their lead. First Bendtner got on the end of Christian Eriksen's free-kick but could not keep the instinctive effort down, then Aleksandar Kolarov brought down Pierre Højbjerg in the area. Stojković kept Serbia in the contest, plunging to his left to rebuff Agger.

Denmark's cushion remained a precarious one and they might have been pegged back three minutes into the second half. Kolarov's deep set piece found Aleksandar Mitrović in space and the diving header looked goalbound only for Schmeichel to instinctively push it up and onto his crossbar.

Another Schmeichel intervention, this time from Adem Ljajić, kept Denmark in front, yet the left flank proved a promising outlet for the Serbs in the second half. It took a fine Agger interception to prevent Mitrović tapping in another Kolarov centre.

Stojković was continuing to hold the hosts at bay at the other end, touching over Eriksen's deflected strike, yet when he was beaten for the second time Denmark's victory was rubber-stamped. Ljubomir Fejsa was robbed just inside his own half and Jakob Poulsen advanced to roll his shot into the corner of the net.
