Dynamo dismiss Mykhaylychenko

FC Dynamo Kyiv have fired coach Olexiy Mykhaylychenko after two years and replaced him with Jozsef Szabo.

Surprise defeat
The Ukrainian champions suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat in the first leg of their third qualifying round tie against the Turkish side, and it proved the final act of Mykhaylychenko's two-year reign. The club's vice-president for sport, Szabo, has replaced Mykhaylychenko on a temporary basis, an appointment made to "protect the heritage and maintain the traditions of the club", according to a statement on the Dynamo website.

'Unsatisfactory performances'
The statement added: "After studying the situation, the Dynamo leadership have come to the conclusion that immediate changes are required to the coaching staff." It also cited "unsatisfactory team performances". This was Dynamo's second home defeat of the season as they had already lost 2-0 against their closest rivals FC Shakhtar Donetsk.

Two league titles
Mykhaylychenko, a former Russian international, took the helm at Dynamo in summer 2002 following the death of Valeriy Lobanovskiy. He won the league and cup double in 2003 and the league title again last season.

Experienced figure
The 64-year-old Szabo is an experienced figure, who enjoyed considerable success in a previous spell as Dynamo coach, winning four Ukrainian titles and one cup. He has also worked as head coach at FC Zorya Luhansk, FC SKA Kyiv and FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk as well as coaching the Ukraine national team.

Belkevich blow
Dynamo's prospects of overturning their first-leg deficit against Trabzonspor in Turkey on 25 August will not be helped by the absence of midfield player Valentin Belkevich. He is in plaster after suffering an ankle injury in last night's match and will not be fit to play again before the end of September.
