'Superb' Lyon thrill Le Guen

Olympique Lyonnais coach Paul Le Guen marvelled at a 'superb performance' to overcome Fenerbahçe SK.

Brazilian substitute Nilmar stuck twice in added time to secure victory for Olympique Lyonnais, who advanced to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League by beating Fenerbahçe SK in Group D. Selçuk Sahin put Fenerbahçe in front on 14 minutes but Michael Essien volleyed Lyon level eight minutes later and the home side took the lead though Florent Malouda shortly after the restart. But the impressive Tuncay Sanli hit back for the Turkish champions with 17 minutes to play and despite the sending off of Servet Çetin soon after, looked capable of holding on for a precious point until Nilmar's dramatic late intervention to keep his side two points clear of Manchester United FC - who are five points ahead of Fenerbahçe.

Paul Le Guen, Lyon coach
It was a superb performance. We had some difficult moments but in the end we won and in an excellent manner. We have strong hearts and a team spirit capable of turning games our way late on. We had difficult moments, but I really have confidence in the whole squad. At ten against eleven, despite a few good opportunities, we were not able to win enough of the ball to get any good crosses into the box. The winner finally came [as a result of] a Juninho [Pernambucano] free-kick as it so often does. We will try and finish top of the group like we did last year. That will be very difficult because Manchester United are very good, but we can play with freedom and perhaps even rotate the side a bit. The players finished this match quite tired.

Christoph Daum, Fenerbahçe coach
Lyon had a great match. I congratulate them. We also played well, but we did not get much from it. But I still think we're heading in the right direction. Even though we opened the scoring we were not able to control the play. I am still pleased with the performance, especially considering that we were reduced to ten men towards the end, but of course I am disappointed with the result. Even if we had one more point it would not really change anything - we have to beat [AC] Sparta [Praha] to qualify for the UEFA Cup.

Sidney Govou, Lyon striker and captain
I was very proud to be captain [for the first time]. Nilmar came on and won it for us. We really have a quality squad. We're winning these sorts of matches these days, we might not have done in past seasons. It is a real achievement to qualify after only four matches. We deserve it.
