'Superb spirit' satisfies Deschamps

AS Monaco FC coach Didier Deschamps said his side showed "verve and dynamism" in beating Liverpool FC.

Didier Deschamps, Monaco coach
To continue in this competition we had to win this match. Unfortunately, Olympiacos's victory against Deportivo in the other match means we will have to win our final game in Spain to be sure of qualifying. That win won't come easy. Tonight was a physical battle against a team of warriors of the highest level. We opted for verve and dynamism. It was not easy, but our spirit was superb. We have to look forward and build on what we did tonight.

Rafael Benítez, Liverpool coach
It was a very physical game for us. We had planned to play with one striker and wingers, and in the first two minutes we lost one of our wingers. If you can't play properly or do the things you want to it is very tough. When you concede a goal like we did, it is even more disappointing. We didn't play well today but we are playing well at home and our aim now will be to beat Olympiacos 2-0 to go through.

Steven Gerrard, Liverpool captain
It was a difficult match and we're gutted with the result. We thought we could come here and get a result but I don't think we played well enough. It's going to be a big night at Anfield [against Olympiacos] but when we had to beat Roma by two a few years ago we managed it. I'm sure the fans will have a big part to play again and hopefully we can still do it. We're having no luck on the injury front and it's disappointing to lose two more players [Luis García and Josemi] but we've just got to stick together. We've got other players that can come in and it gives them an opportunity.
