Schaaf praises hero Valdez

Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf hailed goalscorer Nelson Valdez as they defeated Valencia CF to qualify.

Thomas Schaaf, Bremen coach
Valdez is a player capable of doing magical things but too often he is in the shadow of other players in the team, so I am very pleased for him. It wasn't easy for my opposite number because his team had to score and were under pressure because we were making chances, but we had a marking scheme to cope with them and our defence held firm. We have played very well since our first game against Inter [0-2]. It has been a fantastic campaign and we have earned what has happened to us. We set out to play attacking football and stayed true to our philosophy tonight.

Claudio Ranieri, Valencia coach
It's very disappointing to go out of the Champions League in the group stage but there will be no recriminations for my lads because they gave it everything they had. We knew we were playing a very strong team, who are good from back to front, and when you play the German champions you know they are very capable of hurting you. However disappointing this is, we will have a day off for the players and the nature of football means that we must begin our work again and think about the UEFA Cup.
