"We've knocked out the strongest opponents we could have drawn," beamed Barcelona coach Terry Venables after his 'Dream Team' just about squeezed through. Julio Alberto scored in the 82nd minute at the Camp Nou, and the situation deteriorated for Giovanni Trapattoni's side – the reigning champions – when Steve Archibald put the visitors ahead after 30 minutes of the return leg. Michel Platini replied before the break but Barcelona stood their ground, helped by young Juventus striker Marco Pacione missing a number of chances. "Juve fans never forgave me for that," he recalled.

Barcelona and Juventus also met in the second round of the 1970/71 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup – the non-UEFA affiliated precursor to the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League; Juve won both legs 2-1.
