Gerrard goes under the knife

Liverpool FC's Steven Gerrard will have surgery to insert a screw into a broken bone in his foot on Wednesday.

Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard is to have an operation to insert a screw into a broken bone in his foot today.

No delay
The England midfield player suffered the injury in a 2-1 Premiership defeat by Manchester United FC on 20 September and will be out of action for two months. A Liverpool spokesman told the club's website: "It's a small surgical procedure and will take place on Wednesday afternoon. We are confident that this minor operation will not delay his rehabilitation period of eight weeks."

Champions League
Having sat out Liverpool's loss to Olympiacos CFP last week, Gerrard will miss both UEFA Champions League matches against RC Deportivo La Coruña and possibly the trip to AS Monaco FC on 23 November. The 24-year-old will also be absent for England's forthcoming FIFA World Cup games against Wales on Saturday and Azerbaijan next Wednesday.
