Czechs collect Fair Play award

The Czech Republic have collected the Fair Play award for UEFA EURO 2004™.
The Czech Republic not only played some superlative football at UEFA EURO 2004™ in Portugal this summer – they also excelled with their sportsmanship.

Fair Play prize
The Czechs, who reached the semi-final in Portugal before losing 1-0 to eventual European champions Greece, won the tournament's Fair Play prize, which they collected at the weekend.

Prague ceremony
Czech coach Karel Brückner and captain Tomáš Galásek received the award from UEFA Executive Committee member Marios N Lefkaritis before Saturday's FIFA World Cup qualifier against Romania at the Letná stadium in Prague. The Czechs won the game 1-0 with a first-half penalty from Jan Koller.

True sportsmanship
Brückner's team finished top of the EURO 2004™ Fair Play rankings with an average mark of 8.5 over their five matches. According to UEFA, they "showed true sportsmanship during the tournament, in which they played attractive football".

Behaviour and respect
The Fair Play ranking is based on criteria including players' behaviour, respect for opponents and referees, positive play as well as the conduct of supporters.
