Panionios push out Pecze

UEFA Cup defeat by Newcastle United FC has precipitated the sacking of Panionios NFC coach Karol Pecze.

A defensive showing in last night's home UEFA Cup defeat by Newcastle United FC has precipitated the sacking of Panionios NFC coach Karol Pecze.

Under pressure
The Czech was already under pressure after last season's sixth-placed side lost 2-0 at OFI Crete FC last weekend to slip to 13th position, one above the relegation zone, in the Alpha Ethniki. Panionios supporters made their displeasure known last night as the Greek side played for a home draw against Newcastle, who won the Group D opener 1-0 thanks to Alan Shearer's 86th-minute penalty.

Third sacking
Pecze joined Panionios in the summer, replacing his countryman Josef Bubenko. The 58-year-old's successor will be named by Monday at the latest, giving the new man time to prepare the team for their second European encounter at Sporting Clube de Portugal on 4 November.
