Robertson toasts famous win

Group A reaction: Heart of Midlothian FC's "fantastic" win away at FC Basel 1893 earned them praise.

It was a very intense match. We started off well but were unlucky that they scored the first goal. It wasn't easy to come back on this pitch but we still made it. We always believed in our chance to win but that's the fascination of football. We played well, I can't reproach any of my players. Now we want to do the same in Budapest [against Ferencváros] that Hearts did here. Basel coach Christian Gross

That was a fantastic performance. If we consider which teams Basel have beaten in this stadium, it makes it all the more special. Now we'll face a very difficult task against Ferencváros at home but if we play as well as we did tonight, we have a good chance of coming through. I can't praise the players enough, I had 14 fighters tonight. The save of Craig Gordon against the diving header of Scott Chipperfield was one of the best I have ever seen. Hearts manager John Robertson

I'm delighted. It's the first goal I've ever scored from open play - I don't even know what I was doing up there. We showed great character and worked so hard for that victory. It feels even better than winning in Bordeaux last season because we went on to lose the second leg of that [UEFA Cup] tie. Hopefully this time we can progress to the next stage. Hearts matchwinner Robbie Nielson

It was plain to see that both teams were a little bit tired because of the amount of games in recent weeks. Nonetheless I think we deserved to win the match because we created more chances and missed quite a few. I had to make the early changes because so many of my players are nursing knocks at the moment. Hopefully our medical staff will get them fit in time for our [Bundesliga] match on Sunday. We are in a good position to go through, but we won't start thinking about the next round until we are definitely assured of a place. Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick

We are disappointed with the result because we didn't come here to lose, but I think we have been able to lift our game in recent weeks. If we can keep up the good work and improve even more than I think we will have a good season. I am sure that today's win will see Schalke through to the next round. Gábor Gyepes has had an unlucky season so far and the own goal was the icing on the cake. Ferencváros coach Csaba László
