French rivals to face off

LOSC Lille Métropole will play Ligue 1 rivals AJ Auxerre in one of a number of fascinating ties in the last 16.

Sporting play Middlesbrough
Lionel Mathis struck four minutes from time for Auxerre at home against AFC Ajax to win 3-1 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate, and Lille's 2-0 overall victory against FC Basel 1893 has ensured Ligue 1 of a presence in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, final hosts Sporting Clube de Portugal eliminated Feyenoord and now play tournament debutants Middlesbrough FC, winners against Grazer AK. However, Lisbon's other contenders - SL Benfica - lost overall at the hands of PFC CSKA Moskva, who take on FK Partizan.

Holders out
Holders Valencia CF are out, defeated on penalties by FC Steaua Bucuresti, who earn a tie against the Spanish champions' local rivals and another Intertoto Cup-winner, Villarreal CF. Two-time UEFA Cup holders Parma FC will encounter Sevilla FC, who ousted Panathiniakos FC with an added-time clincher. The other surviving Athens contenders, Olympiacos CFP knocked out the third 2004 Intertoto Cup victors, FC Schalke 04 and meet former Inter Cities Fairs Cup winners Newcastle United FC, while FC Shakhtar Donetsk face 1980/81 finalists AZ Alkmaar.

Unresolved tie
One Round of 32 tie is still to be resolved, with FK Austria Wien visiting Athletic Club Bilbao on Sunday after the rearranged first leg ended 0-0. An Athletic win would mean an all-Primera División fixture with Real Zaragoza.

March draw
The draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals will take place a day after the Round of 16 concludes, on Friday 18 March in Nyon. The final will be staged at Sporting's Estádio José Alvalade on 18 May.
