Carini swaps Turin for London

Arsenal FC have acted swiftly to replace Richard Wright by signing Uruguay keeper Fabian Carini.

Arsenal FC have acted swiftly to replace Richard Wright by signing Uruguayan international goalkeeper Fabian Carini from Juventus FC on a year's loan with an option to buy.

Limited opportunities
The 22-year-old has joined the English champions from the Italian title winners after failing to oust Juventus and Italy No1 Gianluigi Buffon at the Delle Alpi stadium. Carini now faces a similar battle with David Seaman at Highbury, one which Wright lost to prompt a €5.5m switch to Everton FC on Wednesday.

World Cup appearances
A talented youngster, Carini made his first-team debut for Danubio FC in his homeland at the age of 16 before moving to Turin in the summer of 2000. He captained Uruguay to fourth place in the FIFA World Youth Championship at the age of 19 and played all three games in the recent FIFA World Cup finals, keeping a clean sheet against France.

'Strengthen our squad'
Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger hailed the ability of his latest recruit. "I am delighted to have signed Fabian Carini on loan," said the Frenchman. "He is a young international goalkeeper with outstanding natural ability and a great temperament. He will definitely strengthen our squad as we look forward to next season."

'Many fantastic players'
Carini himself said of the move: "I am delighted to be joining Arsenal, they are one of Europe's great clubs, with many fantastic players. Hopefully I will impress the club and it's supporters sufficiently in order that I can extend my stay at Arsenal."
