Arsenal sign World Cup winner

Arsenal FC have signed Brazilian FIFA World Cup winner Gilberto Silva.

English champions Arsenal FC have strengthened their midfield by signing Brazilian FIFA World Cup winner Gilberto Silva from Clube Atlético Mineiro.

Long-term contract
The FA Premiership title-holders, who announced the news on their website, have revealed that the player, who took part in all of Brazil's seven victories in Korea/Japan, has signed a long-term contract, joining for an undisclosed fee.

'He is a winner'
"I am delighted Gilberto Silva has joined us," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said "He is a naturally gifted, world-class player who has proved by his performances in Japan during the summer that he is a winner. He will give us extra quality and his competitiveness in midfield will provide us with a good balance and added strength."

'I am delighted'
Silva added: "I am delighted to be joining Arsenal. They are the champions of England and have a squad full of world-class international footballers. I am really looking forward to living in London and playing for one of the best teams in Europe."

Training camp
The player is still waiting for a work permit, but has linked up with his new team-mates in a pre-season training camp in Austria as they prepare to defend the FA Premiership and FA Cup, as well as bid for the UEFA Champions League, with a place in the first group stage assured.
