Lagos goal capital for Greece

Panagiotis Lagos struck just before the hour to give Greece second place in UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying Group 2.

Turkey began the game three points ahead of Greece, but aware they had lost in Athens in September. And in a game of few chances Lagos’s simple finish gave the visitors the edge.

There was hope for Turkey when Greece midfield player Alexandros Tziolis was sent off 14 minutes from time, but despite a number of chances for strike partnership Semih Sentürk and Ibrahim Akin, the home team could not level.

Tuesday tests
Both these sides are now five points behind leaders Denmark having played one game more as they race for the two play-off places available, with Ukraine just one point behind Greece and Turkey in fourth. And it is Ukraine who travel to Greece on Tuesday eager to repear their 1-0 home win in Kiev, while Turkey visit point-less bottom team Kazakhstan, also hoping to match a single-goal victory gained in their first encounter.
