Captain Cañas to carry on at Betis

Real Betis Balompié have agreed a new one-year contract with Juan José Cañas as they gear up for a busy season.

Appearance-related clause
The 33-year-old was out of contract at the end of the month but the new deal keeps him at the Seville-based club until June 2006. Cañas will have the option of renewing for a further year if he makes 25 appearances for UEFA Champions League qualifiers Betis in 2005/06.

'Tough season ahead'
The midfielder said: "I think both parties are satisfied with this new agreement, especially as next season is going to be more demanding for the team." As well as lifting the cup, Betis finished fourth in the Primera División to book a place in the Champions League third qualifying round.
