Van Damme strengthens Bremen

Werder Bremen have signed Belgian international Jelle Van Damme on a one-year loan from Southampton FC.

Werder Bremen have signed 21-year-old Belgian international left-back Jelle Van Damme on a one-year loan from Southampton FC.

One-year loan
"He is a very aggressive player, he is quick and excellent in the air," said coach Thomas Schaaf of a player Bremen could sign permanently following the conclusion of his loan next summer. Van Damme is set to replace Ludovic Magnin following his departure for VfB Stuttgart.

Ajax experience
Van Damme joined AFC Ajax from KFC Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen in spring 2002. He then moved to the English Premiership at the start of the 2004/05 campaign, only to be relegated with Southampton. Bremen, having finished in the Bundesliga top three, will play in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round this August.
